We highly recommend being there in person to hand over your car to renters. This is so you can check that it’s the right person picking up the car, explain to them the basic features, as well as document the preexisting condition of the vehicle. If this is not possible, someone you trust like a family member, friend or neighbour would also be suitable.
In some cases, such as if you’re going overseas for an extended period of time, an evee team member may be able to manage handovers on your behalf. Contact our support team if you’d like to learn more.
Check the driver licence
When you meet the renter at the pickup location, it’s very important to check their physical driver’s licence against the licence name and number from their booking (this information is temporarily revealed 24 hours before the rental). If the details don’t match or you are unsure about anything, do not hand over the vehicle and contact our support team - we will be able to assist over the phone.
Explain the car
During a handover, hosts will typically go over the main controls and features of the car. For a lot of renters it is their first time driving electric, so this elevates the experience for them and also gives you peace of mind. Before they drive away, you should also let the renter know any conditions you have about the rental, including the charge and cleanliness return level.
Take photos
It’s very important to take photos or videos of your car when the renter is picking it up. If any damage occurs during the rental, our support team will go back to this as evidence to show the preexisting condition. If we can’t see what the damaged area of your car looked like before, we may not be able to prove the renter is liable so the more photos the better!
In addition, take photos of the odometer and battery level before and after the rental so you can charge the renter accordingly.
If you are unsure about any of the above, you can also follow our step-by-step Handover Checklist. It’s not compulsory for every rental but is good practice for your first few bookings while you get the hang of things 🙂
